Onboard Air Disinfection Technology Overview

Onboard Air disinfection technology utilizes an automated and continuous UVC system that uses a replaceable filter and 254nm UV light in a carefully engineered treatment chamber. It reduces1 levels of viruses, bacteria and fungi by automatically and continuously treating the air. Unlike other 254nm UV light devices, these products may be used in occupied rooms as there is no UV exposure when installed and used properly, allowing for 24 hours per day of concealed ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI).

Onboard Air Disinfection Technology Suggested Applications

Onboard air disinfection technology can be used just about anywhere. The ideal application for this technology is where the goal is to reduce pathogens1 in the air as soon as they enter a space.

How Onboard Air Disinfection Technology Works

This patented device uses fans to draw room air through a filter into a hidden UVC neutralization chamber mounted inside a standard ceiling panel light fixture, with or without integrated ambient illumination. The treated air is then returned to the room as the cycle continues.

Onboard Air Disinfection Technology vs. an HVAC System

When it comes to pathogen1 reduction in a space, an in duct HVAC systems are not as effective as onboard air disinfection technology. With an HVAC system, air travels from the supply duct to the return duct. This carries the pathogens from an infected person to others in the room before entering the UV system within an HVAC unit. With onboard air disinfection technology contaminated air is pulled into the fixture, passes through the 254nm UV tube and then the treated air exits the fixture into the room.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between “Continuous" and “Continual” Disinfection?

The onboard air disinfection technology system runs continuously which means that it runs non-stop 24/7/365, so it is always on. When a technology like Care222® runs continually, that means it runs regularly on an on-going basis, so that it is on for a certain period of time each cycle.

  • How does the Onboard Air UV Light Disinfection work?

The Onboard Air UV Light Disinfection system is designed to work in standard grid ceiling construction for either new or existing projects. This simple system operates without interruption 24/7/365 and does not interfere with how people use the space.

The embedded, patented 254nm treatment technology quietly draws air into a sealed UVC air chamber with a series of fans and filters. Air is circulated through the UVC air chamber where it is treated with an enclosed high intensity 254nm light to inactivate bacteria1, fungus and viruses1 in the air. Treated air is then returned to the room creating a cleaner environment. Available for pathogen1 control only or with integrated ambient illumination, this system is unobtrusive, works continuously within the ceiling design, and maintains the valuable floor space in occupied areas.

  • How is the Onboard Air UV Light Disinfection product maintained?

The integrated MERV 6 filter and 254nm UV lamp should be changed annually. More detailed instructions for maintenance may be found in published installation manuals.
